Neuro-EP

Description

Evoked potentials (EP) are used to study the function of sensory systems (somatosensory, visual, auditory), as well as the brain systems that carry out cognitive processes. This technique is based on the recording of bioelectric brain activity in response to external stimulation (somatosensory evoked potentials) or when performing a cognitive task (cognitive evoked potentials).

For diagnostic purposes, short-latency auditory, somatosensory, visual and motor evoked potentials are most commonly used. For example, brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) are used as a standard neurophysiological test for detection of brainstem lesions and for objective assessment of hearing impairment. Using somatosensory and motor evoked potentials, you can detect the impairment of spinal cord tracts and assess its severity. Visual evoked potentials are important to diagnose multiple sclerosis.
